CALABASH TRIO

New amazing project with the fantastic Brazilian percussionist Renato Martins. We combine the music of Calabash with the rhythms and music from Brazil. The music is a mix of classical music, jazz music & world music.

Renato Martins: Udu Drum & Cajon, Brazil

Jakob Mygind: saxophones, Denmark

Kai Stensgaard: marimba & aluphone, Denmark

Calabash Trio was founded in 2015. The idea came up in 2014 at the  International Music Festival in Taiwan, where Kai Stensgaard met Renato Martins for the first time. They decided to make a new and exciting international collaboration that blends our arrangements and improvisations with the Brazilian music. The music ranges from the energetic to the very beautiful. The style is a crossover between jazz, latin, world, and classical music – we call the style Brazilian World Jazz.

The virtuoso Brazilian percussion style makes the meeting with Calabash to a expolsion of rhythms and sounds. Renato uses a loop machine in which he is a true champion. He is European champion in the loop! It is fascinating to follow his layered structure of Brazilian rhythms through the loop machine.Renato Martins gives many master classes around the world and include sponsored by Latin Percussion, and in this connection appeared on the world’s largest music trade fair NAMM in LA He also has several years played with the famous Cirque de Soleil.
